As per the instructions of Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority, In-charge Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Shri Arpit Singh today visited the District Jail, Orai for the weekely check. He visited various barracks and inquired from the prisoners lodged there and understood their problems and gave necessary directions to the jail administration. Officers of the jail administration were present on this occasion.

During the inspection, In-charge Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Shri Arpit Singh inquired about the advocacy of the cases of prisoners, legal aid/advice given to them and medical treatment and food etc. of women prisoners and children living with them. He took information from many prisoners separately and directed the jail administration to ensure necessary action to provide legal aid to any prisoner who does not have a private lawyer or whose case is not being properly advocated in the courts. If an undertrial prisoner needs a lawyer at government expense for his advocacy, ensure that an application is filed on behalf of the prisoner in the concerned court so that the facility of amicus curiae (friend of the court) is available. Similarly, in case the appeal of prisoners who have been convicted is not being heard, jail appeal should be made as per rules. In this, necessary coordination should be made with the District Legal Services Authority and such cases should be disposed of within the stipulated time so that the appeal period does not expire. If any legal problem is being faced in getting the jail appeal made, then it should be brought to the notice of the District Legal Services Authority and necessary correspondence should be made with the appropriate channel, the Hon’ble High Court Legal Services Committee.

On this occasion, Jailor Mr. Pradeep Kumar, Deputy Jailor Mr. Arvind Sinha and Mr. Amar Singh were also present.
